Updating to the current WordPress version is simple with clicking on a couple of buttons that will automatically update your current version. Yet, there are many users that avoid updating their WordPress Version for fear of a glitch that may cause problems with their site.
The main concern when upgrading WordPress is your database, which you should be backing up regularly with a backup plugin such as DB Backup Manager or the simple plugin WP-DB-BACKUP. From the wordpress menu go to Tools -> Backup to configure the wp-db-backup plugin.
After a current backup of your database, from the wordpress menu go to Dashboard -> Updates and click on the Auto Install button. Your site will go into automatic maintenance mode during the short process of upgrading. If there is a broadband glitch during the process the maintenance mode will expire within five minutes.
The Automatic upgrade will not overwrite the wp-config.php file. Out of all the files within the wordpress system, it is the wp-config-php file that is located in your root folder of the domain name to backup.
As a Thesis user you should always back up the custom folder that is located wp-content -> themes -> thesis -> custom. And, back up all static images such as your header image.
You can also upgrade all your plugins through the automatic upgrade process under the Dashboard Tab. If the Automatic Upgrade process does not work on your system then their is something wrong with your WordPress Instillation. Upgrading regularly will prevent hackers from infiltrating your site.
